Guangzhou — known historically as Canton — is China's third-largest city and the cradle of Cantonese civilisation. Gateway to the Greater Bay Area, UNESCO-recognised culinary capital, and home to one of the world's largest trade fairs.
📜 History
Founded over 2,200 years ago, Guangzhou was the origin of China's Maritime Silk Road and one of the first Chinese cities open to foreign trade. The old trading houses of Shamian Island still recall its colonial-era merchant past.
🍽 Cantonese Cuisine
Widely considered the world's greatest food city by many gourmands. Home of yum cha (dim sum), roast goose, congee, and wonton noodles. No visit is complete without an early-morning dim sum session.
🏙 Modern Skyline
The Tianhe CBD and Zhujiang New Town contain spectacular architecture — the Canton Tower, the Guangzhou Opera House by Zaha Hadid, and the IFC twin towers all reward exploration.
🌿 Green City
Despite its size, Guangzhou is surprisingly lush — Baiyun Mountain, Haizhu Wetland, and tree-lined boulevards give it a subtropical garden character rare in Chinese mega-cities.
🛍 Shopping & Trade
The Canton Fair, held twice yearly, is the world's largest trade fair. Beijing Road and Shangxiajiu offer traditional shopping; Tianhe's malls rival any in Asia for luxury retail.
🚄 Gateway City
Guangzhou is the transport hub of southern China, connecting to Hong Kong (47 min by HSR), Shenzhen, Macau, and the entire PRD. Baiyun Airport is one of Asia's busiest.
