Overview

概览

History

Originally named Mount Yi (黟山), Huangshan was renamed in 747 AD by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty, honouring the mythical Yellow Emperor (Huangdi 黄帝). According to legend, Huangdi himself ascended these peaks to refine medicinal herbs that granted him immortality — a story that made Huangshan a sacred destination for Taoist pilgrims and scholars for over a thousand years.

Ming Dynasty geographer Xu Xiake ascended Huangshan twice and famously declared: "Having seen the Five Sacred Mountains, you need not visit other mountains; having returned from Huangshan, you need not visit even the Five Sacred Mountains." This phrase — now carved into mountain signs — captures how Huangshan became the pinnacle of Chinese landscape appreciation.

Huangshan art formed its own school: the Huangshan (Anhui) School of Painting flourished in the 17th century, with artists such as Hongren and Shitao capturing the mountain's mist-shrouded peaks in ink-wash landscapes. The mountain's UNESCO listing in 1990 recognised it as both a Natural and Cultural World Heritage Site.

Geography

Huangshan spans 160.6 km² in southern Anhui Province, straddling the watershed between the Yangtze River and Qiantang River systems. The range contains 72 named peaks, of which 77 exceed 1,000 metres. The three major peaks — Lotus Peak (Lianhua Feng, 1,864m), Bright Summit (Guangming Ding, 1,860m), and Celestial Capital Peak (Tiandu Feng, 1,829m) — form the crown of the range. Granite sculpted by ice-age glaciers has produced the extraordinary tower-like pillars and sheer cliffs that define the landscape.

Why Go?

为什么去?
🌊
Sea of Clouds
云海 Yúnhǎi

Huangshan's most iconic phenomenon. When the peaks rise above a thick layer of clouds, the entire mountain range appears to float in a white ocean. Five distinct cloud seas can be observed from different viewpoints — best seen between November and May, especially after rain or snow.

Ancient Pine Trees
黄山松 Huángshān Sōng

Huangshan's legendary pines cling to vertical granite cliffs, shaped by wind and ice into extraordinary forms. The most famous — the Guest-Greeting Pine (Yingke Song) — is a national symbol. Over 30,000 named pines grow in the scenic area, some over 800 years old.

Sunrise & Sunset
日出日落

Watching the sunrise and sunset from Huangshan is a bucket-list experience. The best viewpoints — Lion Peak, Dawn Pavilion, and Bright Summit — offer panoramas of clouds turning gold and crimson. Staying overnight on the mountain is essential for catching these moments.

🏔
Granite Peaks & Rocks
奇石怪峰

Ice-age glaciation sculpted Huangshan's granite into fantastically shaped towers, arches, and balanced rocks — each given imaginative names. "Stone Monkey Watching the Sea," "Immortal Pointing the Way," and "Turtle Looking at the Sea" are among the most visited formations.

Hot Springs
温泉 Wēnquán

Huangshan's natural hot springs have been enjoyed for over a thousand years. Known as the "Springs of Youth," legend holds that the Yellow Emperor himself bathed here. The spring area at the foot of the mountain is the perfect relaxation after a day of mountain hiking.

Huizhou Culture
徽州文化

The surrounding region is the heartland of Huizhou civilisation — whitewashed mansions with grey-tile "horse-head" gabled walls, Moon Ponds, stone arches, and intricate wood carvings. The nearby UNESCO villages of Hongcun and Xidi are unmissable cultural treasures.

Weather & When to Go

气候 · 最佳时间
🌸
Spring
March – May

Lush green peaks and waterfalls. Very crowded — July/Aug school holidays. Higher chance of fog and afternoon thunderstorms. Coolest escape from China's heat.
🍁
Autumn ⭐ Best
September – November
8°C – 22°C
Peak season. Clear blue skies, crimson maples, spectacular sea of clouds. Ideal photography conditions. October National Holiday is crowded — visit Sept or mid-Nov.
❄️
Winter
December – February
-8°C – 5°C
Snow transforms the mountain into a silver world of ice and rime. Fewest tourists, cheaper rates. Some paths may close. Stunning cloud seas. Pack warm layers.

⚠️ Avoid Chinese National Holidays

During Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb), Labour Day (May 1–5), and National Day Golden Week (Oct 1–7), Huangshan becomes extremely crowded — visitor numbers can triple. Prices also spike. The mountain is beautiful year-round, but shoulder season (April, mid-September, mid-November) offers the best balance of scenery and crowd management.

Food, Drink & Restaurants

美食与餐厅

Food in Huangshan belongs to Huizhou Cuisine (徽菜 Huī Cài) — one of China's eight great culinary traditions. Huizhou cooking emphasises natural flavours, generous oil, slow-braising, and vivid colour. The region's mountainous terrain and mild climate produce exceptional bamboo shoots, wild mushrooms, freshwater fish, and preserved meats.

Practical tip: Buy snacks and water in Tangkou before ascending the mountain. Prices on the summit are 3–5× higher than at the base. For authentic Huizhou dining, head to Tunxi Old Street for the best-value traditional restaurants.

Must-Try Dishes

必吃菜
臭鳜鱼 Stinky Mandarin Fish
Chòu Guìyú — Huangshan's Signature Dish

Fermented in a wooden barrel, the mandarin fish develops a pungent aroma but surprisingly delicate, flavourful flesh with a single central bone. A must-try Huizhou classic. Don't let the name deter you — it tastes far better than it smells!

毛豆腐 Hairy Tofu
Máo Dòufu — Mould-Fermented Tofu

Tofu covered in white mould (Mucor mould), then pan-fried or grilled. The white "fur" gives the tofu a rich, creamy texture and earthy umami depth. Street food at its most adventurous — sold widely at Tunxi Old Street stalls.

石耳炖鸡 Rock Fungus Stewed Chicken
Shí Ěr Dùn Jī

Rock ear fungus (Umbilicaria esculenta) harvested from Huangshan's granite cliffs is prized for its gelatinous texture and nutritional value. Slow-braised with free-range mountain chicken, this dish is a luxury local speciality.

笋干炖肉 Bamboo Shoot Braised Pork
Sǔn Gān Dùn Ròu

Dried bamboo shoots — a Huizhou pantry staple — are rehydrated and slow-braised with fatty pork belly until meltingly tender. The bamboo absorbs the pork fat beautifully. A winter warming dish and hiking recovery meal par excellence.

黄山毛峰茶 Maofeng Tea
Huángshān Máofēng — One of China's Top 10 Teas

Grown in the misty valleys of Huangshan, Maofeng is a delicate green tea with floral aroma, golden-green liquor and a sweet, clean finish. Buy directly from local farms for the freshest spring harvest. Best shops are on Tunxi Old Street.

徽州臭豆腐 Huizhou Stinky Tofu
Huīzhōu Chòu Dòufu

Deep-fried fermented tofu with a pungent aroma and crispy outside, soft inside. Served with chilli sauce and scallion. A street food staple throughout Tunxi's old quarter — follow your nose to find the best vendor. Best washed down with rice wine.

Shopping

购物

Huangshan is famous for four traditional crafts collectively called the "Four Treasures of Huizhou Study" (文房四宝): Huizhou ink sticks (徽墨), She inkstones (歙砚), Xuan paper (宣纸), and Huizhou writing brushes. Tunxi Old Street is the best place to shop, with century-old stores selling genuine local products.

🖋
Huizhou Ink & Inkstones
徽墨 · 歙砚

Traditional Huizhou ink sticks (Huimò) are among China's finest calligraphy supplies, made from pine soot and animal glue pressed into ornate molds. She County inkstones (Shèyàn) — carved from purple-black slate found locally — have been prized by scholars since the Tang Dynasty. Visit Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory in Tunxi for a live demonstration.

🍵
Huangshan Maofeng Tea
黄山毛峰

One of China's top 10 famous teas, grown on the fog-wrapped slopes of Huangshan. The finest grade, "Grade 1 Special" (特级), is harvested in early spring from the highest altitudes. Buy from reputable shops on Tunxi Old Street or directly from farms in Xiuning or Yi County for the best quality and price.

🏺
Hui-Style Handicrafts
徽州工艺品

Huizhou woodcarvings (木雕), stone carvings (石雕), and brick carvings (砖雕) — the "Three Carvings of Huizhou" — are exquisite art forms found decorating ancient mansions. Smaller reproduction pieces make excellent authentic souvenirs. Also look for silk fans, bamboo products, dried mushrooms, and local rice wine.

Getting There & Getting Around

交通

🚄 High-Speed Rail

Best option from major cities. Huangshan North Station (黄山北站) handles high-speed services: ~2.5hrs from Shanghai Hongqiao, ~4.5hrs from Hangzhou, ~5hrs from Beijing. From the station, take bus or taxi to Tangkou town (approx. 50km, 1hr). Slower trains use Huangshan Station in Tunxi District (city centre).

✈️ By Air

Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN, 屯溪国际机场) serves domestic routes from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, and Chengdu. A few international routes serve Seoul–Incheon. The airport is only 5.5km from downtown Tunxi and 70km (~1 hour) from the mountain scenic area. Taxis and shuttle buses available.

🚌 Bus (City to Mountain)

From Huangshan North station or city bus station, take a coach to Tangkou town (the base gateway). Buses run regularly (¥20–30). From Tangkou, take the scenic area shuttle bus to one of four cable car stations. Round-trip shuttle: ¥19. Local tip: book buses in advance during national holidays.

🚡 Cable Cars (On Mountain)

Four cable cars access different parts of the mountain. Yungu Cable Car (云谷索道, East/Back Mountain) is recommended — less crowded. Yuping Cable Car (玉屏索道, Front Mountain) is near the Greeting Pine. Taiping Cable Car (太平索道) offers access to the north. Check last departure times — missing the cable car means a 2–3 hour descent on foot.

🥾 Hiking the Mountain

All trails on Huangshan are paved stone staircases, well-signed in English and Chinese. Front Mountain (南坡) is steeper and more dramatic; Back Mountain (北坡) is less crowded and easier. West Sea Grand Canyon is the most thrilling hike. Allow 1 day for highlights, 2 days to see all major areas, 3+ days for a thorough exploration.

🛺 Getting Around the City

Huangshan City (Tunxi District) is compact and walkable. Taxis and DiDi (China's Uber equivalent) are cheap and reliable. Hire a driver for day trips to Hongcun, Xidi, and other villages (¥300–500/day is typical for a full-day private car). Public buses connect major districts. The city is tourist-friendly with English signage.
