Anhui's main gateways are Hefei Xinqiao International Airport (HFE) for the provincial capital and Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN) for the southern Huizhou region. Hefei has direct domestic flights to all major Chinese cities and selected regional international flights.
High-speed rail (HSR) reaches Hefei in ~3 hrs from Shanghai, ~4 hrs from Beijing, and ~2 hrs from Nanjing. The Hefei–Huangshan HSR line connects the capital to the mountain in about 2 hrs.
Within Anhui, HSR connects Hefei, Wuhu, Tongling, Anqing, and Huangshan. Hefei has a metro system. For Huizhou villages (Xidi, Hongcun, Yi County), hire a car or join a guided tour from Tunxi.
DiDi (ride-hailing) works in all major cities. Long-distance buses serve smaller towns. Mountain destinations have cable cars (Huangshan, Jiuhua, Tianzhu).
WeChat Pay and Alipay handle nearly all transactions. International visitors should link a foreign card to one of these before arrival. ATMs accept foreign cards in major cities.
Anhui is more affordable than coastal provinces. Budget travellers can manage on ¥200–300/day; comfortable travel runs ¥400–700/day. Huangshan and Hongcun are pricier than other areas.
Mobile data is fast and inexpensive with a Chinese SIM. Foreign visitors can buy tourist SIMs at airports. WhatsApp, Google, and most Western apps are blocked — install a reputable VPN before entering China.
Wi-Fi is available in hotels and cafés but may require a Chinese phone number to log in.
China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy). Most Western passport holders are now eligible. Check current eligibility before travelling.
Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies/consulates if your country is not on the visa-free list. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days.
Mandarin is the universal language; English is limited outside major hotels and the main Huangshan tourist sites. Download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate (offline Chinese pack) before you go.
Huizhou (Hui) dialect is heard in the south, Jianghuai Mandarin around Hefei, and Wu dialect in the southeast — but staff at tourist sites speak Mandarin.
Anhui cuisine (Hui Cai / 徽菜) is one of China's 8 great cuisines — known for slow stewing, smoked and pickled meats, wild herbs, and the legendary "Smelly Mandarin Fish" (臭鳜鱼). Bamboo shoots, pine mushrooms, and Huizhou pork dishes feature heavily.
Try Huangmei Opera dinner shows in Anqing, hairy crab feasts on Chao Lake (Sept–Nov), and Hefei roast duck. Tunxi Old Street is a paradise of Huizhou snacks and street food.
Anhui is generally very safe. Tap water is not drinkable — buy bottled. Summers can be extremely hot and humid (35°C+) along the Yangtze; carry sunscreen and stay hydrated. Mountain temperatures drop sharply at night, even in summer.
Plum-rain season (June–July) brings heavy rainfall and flood risk on the Yangtze plains. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
