Dos, Don'ts & Local Tips

Dos
  • 🍵Accept tea when offered — it's a sign of hospitality and respect.
  • 🎁Bring a small gift when visiting a Chinese home. Food items or sweets are ideal.
  • 🥢Learn to use chopsticks. Place them horizontally on the rest when not in use.
  • 👟Remove shoes when entering homes and some traditional guesthouses.
  • 📸Ask permission before photographing people, especially in rural areas and temples.
  • 🙏Dress modestly and respectfully when visiting Buddhist or Taoist temples.
  • 🗺️Download offline maps. Mobile data can be patchy in rural and mountainous areas.
Don'ts
  • 🥢Never stick chopsticks upright in rice — it resembles funeral incense offerings.
  • 🕐Don't give clocks as gifts. 送钟 (sòng zhōng) sounds like "attending a funeral."
  • 👋Avoid discussing Taiwan, Tibet, or Tiananmen in formal or public settings.
  • 🤧Blowing your nose at the dinner table is considered very rude. Excuse yourself.
  • 🔢Avoid the number 4 (四, sì) where possible — it sounds like "death."
  • 🖊️Never write someone's name in red ink — historically associated with death.
  • 💸Don't tip in mainland Chinese restaurants — it can be seen as offensive.

⚠️ Counterfeit Goods Awareness

China's markets are legendary — but so are counterfeits. Designer goods, electronics, and "antiques" may be fakes. Don't risk importing fakes home (customs may confiscate them). Stick to official brand stores for genuine luxury items. For electronics, always test before paying.
