Why Visit Guangxi?

General Travel Information

Practical tips to help you plan your Guangxi journey.

✈️ Getting There

Guangxi has two main international airports: Nanning Wuxu International (NNG) and Guilin Liangjiang International (KWL). Guilin has the most tourist-focused connections; Nanning has better regional coverage including flights to/from Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

High-speed rail links Nanning to Guangzhou (~2.5h), Beijing (~8h), and Shanghai (~7h). Guilin North connects to Guangzhou (~2h) and Shenzhen (~2.5h).

🚄 Getting Around

High-speed rail connects major cities — Nanning, Guilin, Liuzhou, Wuzhou, and Beihai all have HSR stations. For Longji Terraces, Yangshuo, Detian Waterfall, and most rural destinations, hire a car or take a bus/taxi.

The Li River cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo) is a must-do and requires a separate ticket booking. DiDi (ride-hailing) works in all cities. Cycling is the best way to explore Yangshuo's countryside.

💰 Money & Costs

China uses WeChat Pay and Alipay for almost all transactions. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs accept foreign cards in all cities.

Guangxi is one of China's more affordable provinces. Budget travel runs ¥150–250/day; comfortable mid-range is ¥400–700/day. Guilin and Yangshuo are pricier than other destinations.

📱 Connectivity & VPN

Mobile data is fast (4G/5G) and cheap with a Chinese SIM. Tourist SIMs are available at airports. WhatsApp, Google, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked — download a reliable VPN before entering China.

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafés. Rural areas (Longji, Sanjiang) may have limited data connectivity — download offline maps in advance.

🛂 Visas & Entry

China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (expanding policy). Check the official current list before travel. Most Western passport holders are now eligible.

Guangxi shares a land border with Vietnam. The Dongxing–Móng Cái crossing (Fangchenggang) and the Friendship Pass–Đồng Đăng crossing (Pingxiang) are the most-used points. Vietnamese e-visa available for most nationalities.

🗣️ Language Tips

Mandarin is universal; English is limited to larger hotels and popular tourist sites in Guilin and Yangshuo. Outside major tourist areas, translation apps are essential. Download Pleco and Google Translate with offline Chinese packs.

Zhuang (壮语) is spoken by 18 million people in Guangxi but most Zhuang people also speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Cantonese is widely spoken in eastern Guangxi (Wuzhou area).

🍜 Food Culture

Guangxi cuisine is heavily influenced by Zhuang, Cantonese, and Vietnamese flavours. The must-eats: Guilin Rice Noodles (桂林米粉) — 2,000-year-old classic; Liuzhou Snail Noodles (螺蛳粉) — pungent and addictive; Nanning Night Market (Zhongshan Road) — one of China's top street food destinations.

Try sticky rice dumplings (粽子), roast piglet, bamboo rice, and fresh Beibu Gulf seafood. Zhuang rice wine ceremonies are a cultural highlight in village stays.

📸 Photography Tips

Guangxi is one of China's most photogenic provinces. Key golden-hour spots: Xingping (Li River, 20-yuan note view), Longji (terrace reflections in spring), Detian (waterfall at dawn), Xiapu-style coastal light at Beihai.

For the Li River, book the earliest morning cruise to get the best mist. For Longji, stay overnight to catch sunrise. Drone regulations apply in scenic areas — check permissions before flying.
