Practical tips to help you plan your Hainan journey.
Hainan has two major airports: Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) in the north and Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) in the south. Sanya has direct flights from major Chinese cities and some international routes.
A ferry service connects Haikou to Xuwen in Guangdong province across the Qiongzhou Strait.
The Hainan High-Speed Railway loops the entire island in two routes: Eastern Ring (Haikou–Sanya, ~90 min) and Western Ring. Together they form a complete circuit of the island at excellent value.
DiDi (ride-hailing) operates island-wide. Car rental is recommended for the interior highlands, Li minority villages, and the Shishan Volcano area.
WeChat Pay and Alipay are universally accepted. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs in cities accept foreign cards.
Wide cost range: budget travel ¥200–300/day; comfortable resort travel ¥800–2,000/day at Yalong Bay luxury hotels. Duty-free shopping at Haitang Bay offers genuine savings on luxury goods.
Hainan has a tropical monsoon climate. The dry season (October–April) is ideal for beach tourism with temperatures of 22–32°C and low humidity. The wet season (May–September) brings heavy rain and typhoon risk.
The central highlands (Wuzhishan) are several degrees cooler year-round — a welcome relief in summer. Northern Hainan (Haikou) is slightly cooler than the south coast.
China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy). Hainan also operates a special 59-country visa-free policy for international tourists arriving directly to Hainan — up to 30 days on the island.
The Hainan visa-free policy is separate from and in addition to national visa-free schemes. Check the latest official list as it expands regularly.
Most beaches are safe for swimming, but always observe posted flags. Typhoon season (June–October) can bring dangerous rip currents. Check forecasts before water activities.
UV radiation is intense year-round at this tropical latitude. High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and a rashguard are essential even on overcast days. Ocean water temperature is warm year-round (24–30°C).
Mandarin is universal. Hainanese (a Min Nan dialect) is spoken locally. Li and Miao minority languages are heard in the central highlands. English is limited outside major Sanya resort hotels.
Download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate with an offline Chinese pack before arrival. The DiDi app works well for transport without requiring Mandarin.
Mobile data is fast (4G/5G) and inexpensive with a Chinese SIM, available at Haikou and Sanya airports. WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, and most Western apps are blocked — download a reliable VPN before entering China.
Resort hotels in Sanya often provide VPN-friendly networks for international guests. Free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafes.
