Why Visit Heilongjiang?

General Travel Information

Practical tips to help you plan your Heilongjiang journey — especially in winter.

✈️ Getting There

Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB) is the main gateway, with flights from Beijing (~2 hrs), Shanghai (~3 hrs), and several international connections to Russia, Japan and South Korea.

High-speed rail links Harbin to Beijing (~5.5 hrs), Shenyang and Dalian. Harbin West Station serves HSR. Domestic connections are frequent, especially during Ice Festival season (Jan–Feb).

🚄 Getting Around

Harbin has a good metro system and extensive bus network. For destinations like China Snow Town, Yabuli or Mohe, long-distance trains or chartered vehicles are necessary.

Yabuli is ~3 hrs by bus from Harbin. China Snow Town is ~5 hrs. Mohe requires flying or an overnight train from Harbin. DiDi ride-hailing works well within Harbin.

🧥 Winter Clothing

Temperatures regularly reach −25°C to −38°C in winter. Layering is essential: thermal base layer, fleece mid-layer, and a down coat rated to −40°C. Hand warmers and insulated boots are critical.

Electronics and batteries drain fast in extreme cold — keep phones inside inner pockets. The Ice Festival outdoor areas require 2–3 hours of exposure, so dress for it seriously.

💰 Money & Costs

China uses WeChat Pay and Alipay almost universally. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs accept foreign cards in Harbin city centre.

Heilongjiang is among China's more affordable provinces. Budget travellers can manage on ¥150–250/day outside Harbin Ice Festival peak. Festival period hotels near Ice World can cost 3–5x normal rates — book months ahead.

📱 Connectivity & VPN

4G/5G coverage is strong in Harbin and major towns but patchy in remote forest and border areas. Get a Chinese tourist SIM at Harbin airport. Download a reliable VPN before entering China.

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked. WeChat is the essential communication tool — set up before arrival. Wi-Fi widely available in hotels.

🛂 Visas & Entry

China offers visa-free entry to 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy). Most Western passport holders are eligible — check the current official list before travel as it evolves.

Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies if your country is not covered. Border crossings into Russia (Heihe–Blagoveshchensk, Fuyuan) require separate Russian visas.

🍜 Food Culture

Northeast Chinese cuisine (东北菜 Dongbei Cai) is hearty and warming — perfect for the brutal winters. Specialities include: pot-stickers (锅贴), sour cabbage stew (酸菜炖猪肉), red sausage (红肠), and kvass beer.

Harbin's Russian culinary heritage is unmistakeable — dark rye bread (大列巴), smoked sausage, and borscht remain popular. Dongbei hotpot is especially popular in winter.

🏥 Health & Safety

Heilongjiang is very safe for tourists. The main risk is the extreme cold: frostbite and hypothermia are genuine dangers if poorly dressed. Cover all skin in temperatures below −20°C.

Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in China. Medical facilities in Harbin are modern; rural areas have limited hospitals. Travel insurance with medical and emergency evacuation cover is strongly recommended.
