General Travel Information

Practical tips to help you plan your Henan journey.

✈️ Getting There

Henan's main gateway is Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO), with direct flights to major Asian cities and domestic routes across China. Luoyang has a smaller domestic airport (LYA).

Zhengzhou East Station is one of China's busiest high-speed rail hubs, with direct HSR to Beijing (~2h), Shanghai (~3.5h), Xi'an (~2h) and Wuhan (~1.5h).

🚄 Getting Around

High-speed rail connects Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Anyang and Xinyang quickly and cheaply. For Shaolin Temple, Yuntai Mountain and Guoliang Village, hire a car or join a day tour — public transport is limited.

DiDi (ride-hailing) works well in all major cities. Intercity buses reach smaller towns including Dengfeng (for Shaolin). Luoyang and Zhengzhou have city bus networks.

💰 Money & Costs

WeChat Pay and Alipay are used for virtually all transactions in Henan. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs accepting foreign cards are available in cities and airports.

Henan is one of China's more affordable provinces. Budget travel runs ¥150–250/day; comfortable travel ¥400–600/day. Scenic area entry fees (Shaolin, Longmen, Song Mountain) add up — budget ¥100–200 per major site.

📱 Connectivity & VPN

Mobile data is fast (4G/5G) and inexpensive with a Chinese SIM card available at Zhengzhou airport. WhatsApp, Google, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked in China — install a VPN before arriving.

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and hostels, though may require a Chinese phone number. Most scenic areas have patchy coverage — download offline maps (Maps.me or Amap) in advance.

🛂 Visas & Entry

China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy). Most Western passport holders are now eligible — check the latest official list as coverage expands regularly.

Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies or consulates if your country is not on the visa-free list. Zhengzhou airport offers 72-hour and 144-hour transit visa-free options for eligible nationalities.

🗣️ Language Tips

Mandarin (Putonghua) is spoken throughout Henan. The local Central Plains dialect (中原官话) is broadly similar to standard Mandarin. English is very limited outside major hotels in Zhengzhou — download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate (offline Chinese pack) before travel.

At Shaolin Temple and Longmen Grottoes, English signage and occasional English-speaking guides are available. Everywhere else, a translation app is essential.

🍜 Food Culture

Henan cuisine (豫菜) is one of China's oldest culinary traditions — the birthplace of many techniques later adopted across China. Signature dishes include Luoyang Water Banquet (洛阳水席, 24-course feast), Henan braised noodles (烩面), Kaifeng pork soup buns (灌汤包) and Xinyang Maojian tea.

Kaifeng's Sihou Street night market is one of China's most famous street food destinations. Zhengzhou's Muslim Quarter offers Hui-style lamb and flatbread dishes influenced by the Silk Road.

🏥 Health & Safety

Henan is generally very safe for tourists. Tap water is not drinkable — always use bottled water. Summers can be extremely hot in the plains (35–40°C); carry sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially at outdoor sites like Longmen and Yinxu.

High altitude sites (Song Mountain, Yuntai) require appropriate footwear. Air quality in Zhengzhou and other cities can be poor in winter (November–February). Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
