Practical tips to help you plan your Hunan journey.
Hunan has two main airports: Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX) — the main hub with direct flights to major Asian cities, and Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) for the park region.
High-speed rail connects Changsha to Beijing (~5 hrs), Shanghai (~4 hrs), Guangzhou (~2 hrs) and Shenzhen. Changsha South is the main HSR station.
High-speed rail is excellent between major cities. Changsha, Hengyang, Yueyang, and Zhuzhou are all well-connected. For Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang, and western Hunan, combine trains to Jishou or Zhangjiajie West with local buses or hired cars.
DiDi ride-hailing works well in Changsha. For Zhangjiajie park, shuttle buses run between all scenic zones.
WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate all transactions. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs are available in all cities; less so in remote western Hunan.
Hunan is affordable — budget travel ¥150–250/day; comfortable travel ¥400–700/day. Zhangjiajie park entry tickets (¥248 peak) are the main expense.
4G/5G mobile data is fast and cheap across the province, though signal weakens in remote gorge areas of western Hunan. Tourist SIM cards available at Changsha airport.
Google, WhatsApp and most Western apps are blocked. Download a reliable VPN before entering China. Hotels have Wi-Fi but may require a Chinese phone number.
China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy, expanding). Most Western passport holders are now eligible — check the current official list before travel.
Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies/consulates if your country is not on the visa-free list. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days.
Mandarin (Putonghua) is universal. The local Xiang dialect is distinct but all educated locals speak Mandarin. In western Hunan, Miao and Tujia languages are heard in villages alongside Mandarin.
English is limited outside Changsha's major hotels and Zhangjiajie's tourist zones. Download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate's offline Chinese pack before travelling.
Hunan cuisine (湘菜 Xiāngcài) is one of China's eight great culinary traditions — famous for its fresh chilli heat (not the numbing Sichuan style), smoked pork, preserved vegetables, and bold umami. Changsha's street food scene is world-class.
Must-try: Mao-style red-braised pork (毛氏红烧肉), Changsha stinky tofu (臭豆腐), rice noodles (米粉), smoked Tujia pork, and Dongting Lake fish dishes.
Hunan is very safe for tourists. The major risk is summer heat — July–August in Changsha can exceed 40°C with high humidity. Carry water, sunscreen and light clothing. Zhangjiajie's glass walkways may be closed in icy or stormy conditions.
Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Hunan. Bottled water is cheap and widely available. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
