Essential tips for planning your Shaanxi journey.
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) has direct flights from major Chinese cities and international routes to destinations in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. From Beijing (~1.5 hrs) and Shanghai (~2 hrs) by air.
High-speed rail connects Xi'an North Station to Beijing (~4.5 hrs), Shanghai (~5.5 hrs), Chengdu (~1.5 hrs), and Zhengzhou (~2 hrs).
Xi'an has 9 metro lines covering all major tourist sites. The City Wall, Muslim Quarter, Terracotta Army bus route, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda are all metro-accessible.

WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate. International visitors can link a foreign Visa/Mastercard to WeChat Pay's international version before arrival. ATMs in Xi'an accept foreign cards.
Xi'an is significantly cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai. Budget travel: ¥200–350/day. Comfortable mid-range: ¥500–700/day. Most attraction tickets: ¥50–150.
The Shaanxi History Museum is free but requires advance online booking — free tickets are exhausted by 9am on peak days. Book via the official WeChat mini-program or website.
The Terracotta Army and Mount Huashan peak-season tickets should be booked 1–3 days in advance. Trip.com (Ctrip) handles English-language bookings for most sites.
Xi'an's street food is among China's finest. Must-eat: Roujiamo (肉夹馍 — the 'Chinese hamburger'), Biangbiang noodles (wide, hand-pulled belt noodles), Yangrou paomo (lamb and bread stew), and persimmon cake.
The Muslim Quarter is the epicentre. Seek out the original Tongshengxiang restaurant for paomo. For biangbiang noodles, the alleyways off Beiyuanmen are authentic and cheap.
Mobile data is fast (4G/5G) across Xi'an and most tourist areas. Foreign visitors can buy a tourist SIM at Xi'an Xianyang Airport. Google, WhatsApp, and most Western apps are blocked — download a VPN before entering China.
Xi'an's metro stations, major hotels, and the Muslim Quarter have free Wi-Fi. A Chinese phone number is often required to log in to public networks.
China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy, expanding regularly). Most Western passport holders are now eligible — verify the latest official list before booking.
Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies if your country is not visa-free. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Xi'an Xianyang Airport has a 144-hour transit visa-free policy for eligible nationalities.
Mandarin (Putonghua) is universal. English is spoken in major hotels, the Muslim Quarter guesthouses, and some tourist sites. Download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate (offline Chinese pack) before you go.
The local Guanzhong dialect differs noticeably from standard Mandarin — locals speak both. Signs at major tourist sites are in English. Taxi drivers rarely speak English; show destinations in Chinese characters.
