Originally home to Austronesian peoples, Taiwan was settled by Han Chinese in the 17th century during Dutch and Spanish colonial periods. Ceded to Japan in 1895 after the First Sino-Japanese War, it was returned to China in 1945. The Republic of China government retreated here in 1949 following the Chinese Civil War, establishing the vibrant democracy and economic powerhouse it is today.
Taiwan has a subtropical climate with regional variation. Taipei in the north is cooler and rainier; Tainan & Kaohsiung in the south are sunny and tropical. The Central Mountains see snow in winter. Typhoons typically hit July–September. Average summer temperatures reach 33–36°C; winter 12–18°C in the north.
