🗺 Overview & Essentials

Everything you need to know before visiting Chengdu — history, why go, when to go, and quick practical facts.

A Brief History of Chengdu

Chengdu has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years and was the capital of the ancient Shu Kingdom (c. 1100–316 BC), celebrated in mythology and the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The city flourished as a silk production centre during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) and was known as "Brocade City" (锦城). By the Tang Dynasty it rivalled Yangzhou as China's wealthiest city.

During the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD), Chengdu was the capital of Shu Han under Liu Bei and his adviser Zhuge Liang, whose temple (Wuhou Shrine) remains one of the city's most visited landmarks. The city weathered the Mongol conquest, the Ming–Qing transition, and re-emerged as a major cultural and commercial hub in western China.

Today Chengdu is a national centre for aerospace, electronics, and finance — and has earned global renown as the spiritual home of Sichuan cuisine and giant panda conservation.

🚆 Getting Around Chengdu

Chengdu has excellent public transit infrastructure, a modern metro, high-speed rail connections, and an expanding network of bikeshare.

✈️
Arriving by Air

Tianfu International Airport (TFU) — opened 2021, one of China's largest. Located 51km south-east of city centre, served by metro Line 18 (45 min). Shuangliu Airport (CTU) — older hub, metro Line 10 (30 min). Both serve international and domestic routes.

🚄
High-Speed Rail

Chengdu has two main HSR stations: Chengdu East and Chengdu South. Bullet trains connect to Chongqing (35 min), Xi'an (3.5hrs), Beijing (8hrs), Shanghai (9hrs) and more. Essential for day-trips to Leshan and Emei Shan.

🚇
Metro (地铁)

13+ lines serving the city and suburbs. Clean, safe, cheap (¥2–10 per journey). Covers all major sights. Purchase a Tianfu Tong transport card at any station for easy tap-and-go on metro, bus, and bikeshare.

🚌
Bus

Extensive network (¥1–2). Covers areas not reached by metro. Google Maps works in China with VPN or use Baidu Maps / AutoNavi (高德) for real-time routes. BRT rapid bus lines supplement the metro.

🚕
Taxi & Didi

Taxis start at ¥8. Didi (滴滴 — the local Uber) has an English-language app and is generally cheaper and faster than flagging taxis. Essential for reaching panda base, airport late at night, or destinations not on metro.

🚲
Bikeshare & Scooters

Meituan and Hello Bike bikeshare docks are everywhere — scan QR with WeChat/Alipay for ¥1.5 per 30 min. Electric scooter rentals are popular among locals. Cycling along the Jinjiang riverside trail is highly recommended.

🚐
Day-Trip Buses

Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station runs coaches to Leshan (¥50, 1.5hrs), Emei Shan (¥60, 2hrs), Dujiangyan (¥20, 1hr), and beyond. Tourist buses to the panda base depart from Tianfu Square. Pre-book at the station or on Trip.com.

🗺
Navigation Apps

Download AutoNavi / 高德地图 (Gaode Maps) — the most accurate app for Chengdu public transport. Also works without a VPN. Baidu Maps is the alternative. Google Maps is blocked unless you have a reliable VPN active.

Getting to Chengdu from Abroad

Direct flights connect Chengdu to London Heathrow (11hrs), Amsterdam (10.5hrs), Frankfurt, Paris, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, and many more cities via Tianfu International Airport (TFU) or Shuangliu (CTU).
