History & Introduction
历史介绍History of Dalian
Dalian's modern history begins in the late 19th century when Imperial Russia leased the port in 1898, naming it Dal'niy (meaning "far away"). The Russians developed the city with wide boulevards radiating from circular plazas — a European urban plan still visible today. Following the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05), Japan took control and developed it further as Dairen, transforming it into a major industrial and commercial hub for Manchuria. Japan invested heavily in infrastructure, railways, and the port, leaving an architectural legacy of Beaux-Arts and Art Deco buildings.
After WWII the Soviet Union occupied the city briefly before China fully resumed control in 1955. Under reform and opening up, Dalian became one of China's first 14 Coastal Open Cities in 1984. Today it is a major financial, trade, and logistics hub for Northeast China.

It boasts stunning rocky coastline, sandy beaches, a temperate oceanic climate, and some of the finest fresh seafood in China.
