福州 · Fujian's Ancient Capital · Banyan City · Gateway to Taiwan
Fuzhou, meaning "prosperous prefecture," has served as Fujian's capital for over 2,200 years. Founded during the Han Dynasty, the city flourished as a major port on the Maritime Silk Road. Its Mawei District became the cradle of China's modern navy in the 19th century, home to the Foochow Arsenal — China's first modern shipyard. The city's nickname 榕城 (Banyan City) comes from the thousands of ancient banyan trees planted during the Song Dynasty. Fuzhou was also one of the first coastal cities opened to foreign trade after the Opium Wars, giving it a rich legacy of East-West cultural exchange visible in its foreign concession architecture at Yantaishan.
Fuzhou has a humid subtropical climate. Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) are the best seasons — mild temperatures, lower humidity, and beautiful scenery. Summers are hot and humid (typhoon season July–September). Winters are mild and rarely cold.
