概览与历史Guilin (桂林, literally "Forest of Sweet Osmanthus") is widely regarded as China's most scenically breathtaking city. Situated in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, it is surrounded by the iconic karst limestone peaks that rise dramatically from flat plains and meander along the jade-green Li River. This landscape has inspired Chinese painters and poets for millennia and today draws travellers from every corner of the globe.
Guilin's recorded history stretches back over 2,100 years to the Qin Dynasty (221 BC), when the Lingqu Canal was dug — one of the oldest canals in the world still in use today — linking the Li and Xiang Rivers to supply Qin armies during their southern campaign. The city formally became an administrative centre under the Han Dynasty and served as the provincial capital of Guangxi from the Ming Dynasty until 1914.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Guilin served as an important cultural refuge for artists, writers, and academics fleeing occupied territories. After the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, the city was rebuilt and gradually transformed into one of China's premier tourist destinations. Today Guilin balances its role as a bustling modern city with a fiercely protected natural and cultural heritage.
The wider Guilin region is home to multiple ethnic minorities including the Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Dong, and Mulam peoples, adding rich cultural diversity to the natural spectacle. The surrounding villages of the Longji Rice Terraces area, built by Zhuang and Yao communities over 600 years ago, are UNESCO-listed candidates of extraordinary agricultural and cultural value.
