About Jinan
History, when to go, weather, and why this city belongs on your itinerary
History & Heritage
Jinan is one of China's oldest inhabited cities with over 3,500 years of recorded history. Known as the "Cradle of Longshan Culture," it was the birthplace of legendary physician Bian Que and the poet Li Qingzhao. During the Han Dynasty, it served as the capital of the Jibei Kingdom and grew into a major commercial hub on the Grand Canal.
The city flourished under Song and Ming dynasties, when scholars including Li Bai, Du Fu, and Su Shi all visited and wrote odes to its legendary springs. Under the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong proclaimed Baotu Spring the "No. 1 Spring Under Heaven." In the modern era, Jinan became Shandong Province's capital and a major industrial and transport node.
