About Kaifeng

开封介绍

Kaifeng (开封), anciently known as Bianjing (汴京) and Bianliang (汴梁), served as the imperial capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD) — the most cosmopolitan city on Earth at its zenith, with a population exceeding one million. Today it is celebrated as one of China's "Eight Ancient Capitals," preserving a rich legacy of Song-dynasty architecture, Buddhist temples, canals, chrysanthemum gardens, and the vibrant night-market culture that first flourished here over a thousand years ago. The immortal scroll painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival (清明上河图) by Zhang Zeduan captures the city at its peak, and much of that world has been lovingly recreated here. Kaifeng also holds a unique place in Chinese-Jewish history: the Kaifeng Jewish community, one of the oldest Jewish communities in China, settled here over 1,000 years ago.

📖 History in Brief

Kaifeng has been a significant settlement for over 4,100 years, serving as capital to the Wei State in 364 BC and later for eight dynasties including the Five Dynasties period and the glorious Northern Song. At the height of Song rule the city was the world's most populous, a hub of trade, art, printing, and philosophy. Mongol invasions in 1233, repeated Yellow River floods, and the subsequent shift of China's capital left the city diminished — but never erased. Today its ancient core, temples, and canal systems survive as testament to one of humanity's great urban civilizations.
