Lanzhou has been a strategic crossroads for over 3,000 years. Established as a garrison city during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD), it served as the pivotal waypoint on the Silk Road linking Chang'an (Xi'an) to Central Asia and beyond. The city was known historically as Jincheng (金城, "Golden City"). Under the Tang and Ming dynasties it became a major military and commercial hub. In 1953 it was designated a key industrial city and today functions as the provincial capital of Gansu and the commercial heart of China's northwest.
Lanzhou has a temperate continental climate — dry with four distinct seasons, low humidity, over 2,400 hours of sunshine per year, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night.
