About Qingdao 青岛

📜
History

Qingdao was a small fishing village until Germany leased the territory in 1898 following the Jiaozhou Bay Convention. The Germans built a remarkable colonial city with European architecture, a deep-water port, and — most famously — the Germania Brewery, which became Tsingtao Beer. Japan seized the city in WWI; it was returned to China in 1922. Today the old German quarter, Badaguan, and the waterfront remain beautifully preserved.

🌊
Why Go?

Qingdao is one of China's most liveable and visually distinct cities. You get red-roofed German villas, Orthodox churches, and colourful Korean-style neighbourhoods alongside pristine beaches, top-class seafood, and the legendary Tsingtao Beer Festival. The sailing atmosphere, sculpture parks, and Mt. Lao Shan hiking round out a destination unlike anywhere else in China.

🗓
When to Go?

May–June and September–October are the sweet spots — mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer crowds. July–August brings the Tsingtao Beer Festival and beach season but expect high prices and packed beaches. Winter (Nov–Feb) is cold and quiet; spring fog rolls in March–April. Best overall: late May or early October.
