Everything you need to know before you go — history, climate, highlights, and practical tips.
Shaoxing is one of China's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with origins stretching back to the Yue Kingdom (越国) over 2,500 years ago. It served as the capital of the Yue state during the Spring and Autumn period. The legendary Emperor Yu (大禹), who tamed China's ancient floods, is said to be buried here on Mount Kuaiji. During the Eastern Jin Dynasty (4th century AD), the celebrated calligrapher Wang Xizhi (王羲之) composed his famous Orchid Pavilion Preface nearby — a cornerstone of Chinese art.
In modern times Shaoxing is renowned as the birthplace of Lu Xun (鲁迅, 1881–1936), considered the father of modern Chinese literature. Yue Opera (越剧), one of China's most beloved opera styles, originated in the villages of Shengzhou county within the prefecture.
Spring (March–May) — Best season. Cherry blossoms, mild temperatures (15–22°C), lower crowds. Orchid Pavilion area is spectacular.
Autumn (September–November) — Ideal. Harvest season for rice wine grapes, clear skies, comfortable 18–25°C. Highly recommended.
Summer (June–August) — Hot and humid (30–38°C) with a rainy plum-blossom season in June. Not ideal but waterways are vivid.
Winter (December–February) — Cool (2–10°C), far fewer tourists. The winery distilleries are in full production — a unique experience for enthusiasts.
🎉 Festivals: Dragon Boat Festival (June), Mid-Autumn Festival (Sept/Oct), Shaoxing Yellow Wine Festival (October–November).
