Yiwu (义乌, Yìwū) is a county-level city in Jinhua Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, China — population roughly 1.9 million. Though modest by Chinese urban standards, it punches so far above its weight that the United Nations has called it "the world's largest small commodities wholesale market." Every day, more than 220,000 buyers and traders from over 210 countries descend on its five-district International Trade City (义乌国际商贸城), navigating 75,000 booths packed with everything from Christmas ornaments to power tools, artificial flowers to suitcases.

History of Yiwu
义乌历史
📜 Ancient Roots
Yiwu's history stretches back over 2,000 years. The city was established as a county during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC) and is famed as the birthplace of Luobin Wang (骆宾王, c. 640–684 AD), one of the Four Paragons of Early Tang poetry. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Yiwu was a prosperous agricultural and silk-producing region in the broader Jinhua basin.
Under the Ming and Qing dynasties, Yiwu farmers supplemented meagre incomes by wandering the countryside trading sugar for chicken feathers (以糖换鸡毛, yǐ táng huàn jī máo) — a cultural memory that embedded itinerant commerce into the city's DNA and laid the psychological groundwork for what came later.
🏪 Rise of the World's Market (1978–present)
Everything changed with China's Reform and Opening-Up (改革开放) under Deng Xiaoping. In 1982, Yiwu officially opened its first designated small commodities market. Over the following decade, four further iterations expanded the market until the current International Trade City complex began construction in 2001.
By the 2000s, Yiwu had become the world's single largest wholesale bazaar. The China Yiwu International Commodities Fair (义博会), held annually every October, now attracts 500,000+ professional buyers. In 2014, Yiwu was designated the eastern terminus of the Yiwu–Madrid Railway (义新欧, the longest freight train route in the world — 13,052 km).
📦 The Yiwu–Madrid Railway — World's Longest Rail Freight Route
Launched in 2014, the Yiwu–Madrid freight train covers 13,052 km across 8 countries (China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France, Spain) in approximately 21 days — less than half the time of sea freight. It departs weekly from Yiwu's rail freight terminal, carrying small commodities, electronics, and manufactured goods to Europe. The return journey brings wine, olive oil, and industrial goods back to China.
Why Visit Yiwu?
为何来义乌
🛍️ Wholesale Shopping Heaven
Nowhere else on earth can you source 2.1 million product categories under one roof. Whether you're a professional importer, small business owner, or simply a curious traveller, the scale and variety of goods — at factory-direct prices — is genuinely staggering. Budget at least two full days just for the main market complex.
🌍 Global Village Feel
Yiwu hosts one of China's most cosmopolitan communities. The Muslim Quarter (穆斯林街) buzzes with Arabic conversation, Iranian restaurants, halal butchers and Middle Eastern groceries. African traders, Indian merchants, and European buyers create a genuinely international atmosphere unlike any other Chinese city of its size.
🎋 Authentic Zhejiang Life
Beyond the market, Yiwu offers beautiful parks, the serene Xiuhu Lake, the ancient Luobin Wang Memorial, and classic Zhejiang cuisine. The local wet markets, neighbourhood noodle shops, and evening street food scene give a real taste of everyday commercial China away from tourist traps.
🚄 Excellent Connectivity
Yiwu is a superb base for day trips. Hangzhou (West Lake, Longjing tea) is just 50 minutes by high-speed rail. Wenzhou, Ningbo (Tianyi Pavilion), and historic Jinhua are all within 90 minutes. Shanghai is reachable in under 2.5 hours. The domestic airport adds further regional options.
💰 Excellent Value
Outside the luxury hotels, Yiwu is very affordable by international standards. Mid-range hotels run ¥200–400/night. A bowl of noodles costs ¥12–20; a full restaurant meal for two ¥80–150. Even taxi fares and city transport are budget-friendly. Your yuan stretches far here.
🏺 Trade Fair Events
The annual China Yiwu International Commodities Fair (义博会) each October is a must for trade visitors — half a million buyers over five days. The Yiwu Forest of Flowers Festival in spring and various seasonal lantern festivals add cultural colour throughout the year.

🌍 International Dining Scene
Yiwu's trader community has created a remarkable international dining landscape. Halal restaurants (Turkish, Lebanese, Pakistani, Indian) line Binwang Road and Chouzhou North Road. African restaurants, Iranian teahouses, and even Russian-style bars add to the eclectic mix. The city has arguably the best selection of halal food outside of Xinjiang in eastern China.
🍺 Drinking in Yiwu
Yiwu's bar scene caters primarily to the expat trade community. Binwang Road and the Glory Mall area host a cluster of international bars and clubs. The FOB Club and M-box are long-running expat favourites. Craft beer bars have appeared in the newer CBD district. Be aware that many restaurants near the trade market are dry (no alcohol) due to Muslim clientele — plan accordingly.
Getting There & Getting Around
交通出行
✈️
By Air — Yiwu Airport (YIW)
Yiwu Airport is 5 km from the city centre, offering domestic routes to Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, and others. For international flights, use Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) — 90 min by car or train. Shanghai Pudong (PVG) is ~2.5 hours away and has the widest international connections.
🚄
By High-Speed Rail
Yiwu Station (义乌站) connects to Hangzhou (50 min, ¥50–80), Wenzhou (75 min), Ningbo (90 min), Shanghai Hongqiao (2 hr 20 min), and Beijing South (6–7 hrs). The station is 8 km from the ITC — take a taxi (¥25–35) or Bus No. 2. Book via 12306.cn or Trip.com.
🚌
By Long-Distance Bus
Yiwu has two main bus stations. Express coaches connect to Hangzhou (every 20 min, 2 hrs), Ningbo (2.5 hrs), Wenzhou (3 hrs), and Shanghai (3.5 hrs). Bus terminals are conveniently close to the railway station. Useful for shorter regional trips where HSR service is infrequent.
🚕
Taxis & Ride-Hailing
Taxis are metered and affordable — base fare ¥8, most city journeys ¥15–40. Use DiDi (滴滴) for ride-hailing with fixed fares — download before arriving and link to WeChat or Alipay. Many drivers speak no English, so pre-type your destination in Chinese characters or use map sharing.
🚇
Public Transport & Bus
Yiwu currently operates an extensive city bus network (¥1–2 per ride) — Bus 1, 2, and 11 are most useful for visitors, connecting the train station to the ITC complex and city centre. A light rail/metro line was under development as of 2024. Purchase bus cards (公交卡) at convenience stores.
🚲
Shared Bikes & Electric Scooters
Meituan Bike (美团单车) and Hello Bike (哈喽单车) docking stations are scattered throughout the city. Unlock via the respective apps (requires Chinese phone number or a friend's account). Practical for short distances within the market district. Electric scooter rentals available near main hotels for ¥50–80/day.
🚗
Car Hire
International driving licences are not valid in China. Hire a car with a driver through your hotel or via Avis/Hertz local partners (Chinese licence required). Alternatively, negotiate a daily hire rate with a taxi driver — ¥300–500/day for a personal driver is common among trade visitors.
