Why Visit Shandong?

General Travel Information

Practical tips to help you plan your Shandong journey.

✈️ Getting There

Shandong has two major airports: Jinan Yaoqiang International (TNA) for western Shandong and Qingdao Jiaodong International (TAO) — the larger hub with direct flights from Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok and selected European cities.

High-speed rail connects Jinan to Beijing (~1.5 hrs), Shanghai (~2.5 hrs) and beyond. Qingdao also has HSR to Beijing (~3 hrs).

🚄 Getting Around

Shandong's high-speed rail network is excellent, connecting Jinan, Qingdao, Tai'an, Weifang, Yantai and Weihai. The journey between Jinan and Qingdao takes under 1.5 hrs by HSR.

For Qufu, take the HSR to Qufu East Station. Didi (ride-hailing) and taxis are reliable in all cities. Car hire is recommended for the Yellow River Delta and island areas.

💰 Money & Costs

China uses WeChat Pay and Alipay for almost all transactions. International visitors should link a foreign card to WeChat Pay before arrival. ATMs accept foreign cards in cities.

Shandong is mid-range in cost. Budget travellers can manage on ¥200–300/day; comfortable travel runs ¥500–800/day. Qingdao tends to be pricier than inland cities.

📱 Connectivity & VPN

Mobile data is fast (4G/5G) and cheap with a Chinese SIM. Foreign visitors can get a tourist SIM at Jinan or Qingdao airports. Google, WhatsApp and most Western apps are blocked — download a VPN before entering China.

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafés, though may require a Chinese phone number to log in.

🛂 Visas & Entry

China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 38+ countries for up to 30 days (2024–2025 policy). Check the latest official list as this is expanding. Most Western passport holders are now eligible.

Apply for an L (tourist) visa via Chinese embassies/consulates if your country is not on the visa-free list. Processing takes ~3–5 business days.

🗣️ Language Tips

Mandarin (Putonghua) is universal. The Shandong dialect (鲁语) has a distinctive accent but all signs and officials use standard Mandarin. English is spoken in hotels and tourist areas of Qingdao; limited elsewhere.

Download Pleco (dictionary) and Google Translate (offline Chinese pack) before you arrive. Pointing at menus and maps works well.

🍜 Food Culture

Lu Cuisine (鲁菜) is one of China's Eight Great Cuisines and the most influential on northern Chinese cooking. Hallmarks include Jinan spring onion sea cucumber (葱烧海参), Qingdao seafood, Weifang kite-shape dumplings, and Tai'an tofu dishes.

In Qingdao: fresh seafood at the harbour markets paired with Tsingtao draft. In Jinan: Lu cuisine restaurants near Baotu Spring. In Qufu: Confucian Cuisine (孔府菜) banquet.

🏥 Health & Safety

Shandong is very safe for tourists. Tap water is not drinkable — buy bottled water. Summers can be very hot (35°C+) especially inland; the coast is milder. Strong UV at Mount Tai's altitude — carry sunscreen.

Air quality is generally good along the coast. Avoid visiting in late January–February (Chinese New Year) when transport is overwhelmed. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
